If your scooter suddenly no longer starts, you really only want to know two things: what is going on, and what can you check yourself? Below you will find the most common causes. Keep it simple at first. With a few quick checks you can avoid going unnecessarily tinker, or orders things that don't solve the problem. Usually it is one of three: no fuel, no power or no spark.

Step-by-step diagnosis plan for a scooter that won't start
1. Basic checks
Start with these basics. You will often quickly get the hang of this:

Fuel: is there enough gasoline in it? And isn't it outdated, for example after standstill or winter storage?

Start protection: Is the side stand really folded properly, and does the brake switch work as it should?

Contact: Does the ignition switch work properly and is the dead man's switch set to 'on'?
Does the scooter start with the kickstart, but not with the start button? Then it is worth going straight to the electrical checks below.
2. Check the battery and starter motor
If you hear a knock or the starter motor turns slowly, the battery is often (almost) empty. If your dashboard light disappears as soon as you start, this also indicates a weak battery or a connection that does not make good contact.

Does the problem return after charging? Then replacement is usually the fastest solution.

If your scooter has been standing still for a while, the carburetor may be dirty. A recognizable sign: it only wants to start with the start pilot, or only after you accelerate. In that case, cleaning or overhauling is usually necessary.
4. Check spark plug and ignition
The spark plug often quickly tells you what is going on. Take it out and take a look at the electrode.

Wet from gasoline: the engine is flooded or is receiving too much fuel.

Black and soot: often a mixture that is too rich, or many short journeys.

White and dry: too lean mixture or no fuel.
Not sure? Replace the spark plug. If there is no spark afterwards, the spark plug cap, ignition coil, CDI or cables may be involved. If you are not completely comfortable with this, measuring is the safest step.
